Teaching Your Scottish Terrier Not To Jump Up On People

Do you know the reason why your Scottie jumps up on you or on your visitors? That's his way of greeting, of showing how excited he gets by your homecoming. Unfortunately, a lot of people dislike having a strange dog coming up and jumping on them.

Since not everyone is a dog lover, it can be a frightening experience for them. Having dirty paw marks all over their cloths cannot be described as a pleasant experience either. Not mentioning problems created by him jumping up on an elderly person or a child.

Without knowing it many dog owners encourage this behavior when they reward the dog with attention after he jumped up on them. It will then become a normal procedure for him every time he wants your attention. Acting this way, you and your family are certainly doing more harm than good by encouraging your Scottie to jump up on people.

All forms of dog training require consistency and correcting a jumping habit is no different. Failure to do so will lead to confusion with the dog not knowing what is right or wrong.

You need to discourage him by not patting him when he jumps up on you and looking away till he calms down. You can also turn your back and walk away from him. If jumping persists, raise your knee while giving him a firm "sit" or "down" or "no" command. Give him praise and treats when he stops jumping and sits as requested. If not, repeat the process until he no longer jumps.

Teaching your Scottie the basic obedience commands will be a great help to properly addressing jumping problems.
