Behavior Problems

Dog behavior problems are not hereditary or distinctive of a specific breed. They are acquired, as a result of boredom, lack of training or as a response to the owner's behavior.

Here are the top five dog behavior problems:

1. Aggressiveness - Growling, baring teeth, biting, snapping, are manifestations of aggressive behavior. Dogs are not naturally aggressive. An aggressive behavior is normally caused by wrong training methods, abuse or negative actions that make the dog feel threatened in some way. Socialize your Scottie frequently with as many people as possible. Interacting with other dogs and people will inhibit aggression, develop more social skills and make him a better dog. If your Scottie shows aggressiveness correction training must be implemented immediately to curb his behavior. Aggressive behaviors can be modified, but there are dangers involved in working with aggressive dogs, so it is recommended to seek professional advice.

2. Barking - Barking is a natural instinct of all dogs. It's his way of communicating with the world. Your Scottie will bark to beg your attention or to warn you about a specific happening like strangers intruding his territory. Excessive barking, however, does irritate not only you and your family but also your neighbors. Therefore, curbing his barking habit is of utmost importance. Click here to learn more about.

3. Biting - A variety of reasons make puppies and dogs bite and nip. Puppies tend to bite during the teething period. Adult dogs might nip when they are excited or bite when they are threatened. Basic biting training consists of discouraging your Scottie from nipping or biting with a firm "no" while replacing the object with a toy he can bite. Encourage and reward him when he bites the right object. If necessary, do not hesitate to have your Scottie muzzled in crowded places. Read more...

4. Chewing - It is only natural for dogs to want to chew. It is a natural instinct, but they need to be trained what they can and can't chew without causing problems. While they might feel the need to sharpen their teeth you certainly don't want them to be doing that on your furniture. During the teething process puppies will want to chew on everything they can get their mouth on. This can lead to partial or total destruction of some of your belongings.

Some of your visitors or guests may not enjoy being "greeted" that way. Dogs also jump because they were never trained before and jumping has always resulted in getting increased attention.
